As another climbing season on Kalymnos is coming to a close, with hundreds (thousands?) of sattisfied climbers finishing their well-deserved holidays, few of them reflect on a modern history of the place.

So let it be known that it has been a round 20 years since Kalymnos had been heard of internationally and large-scale climbing begun!

As Aris Theodoropoulos writes in his guidebooks, first routes were actually opened in 1997 by Andrea di Bari, but the world heard of it 2 years later: “After publication in Alp and Rotpunkt in the spring of 1999, the way was open for drill-wielding climbers. At that point, climbing on Kalymnos took off.”

So now you know :-) Happy climbing!
